If you’ve tried to book a psychiatric evaluation in New Hampshire lately, you’ve likely been told the same thing: “The next available evaluation is in six months.” In the Granite State, the “waitlist wall” is real. Major hospital systems and community centers are often at capacity, leaving many people with private insurance stuck in limbo.
However, if you have a private insurance plan (like Anthem, Cigna, or Optum/UnitedHealthcare), there is a faster path to care. Here is how to navigate the system and access medication management in weeks, not months.
Why is the Wait So Long in New Hampshire?
The bottleneck usually happens because most referrals are sent to the same few large health systems. Additionally, the state’s 10 Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs) are prioritized for individuals with Medicaid or individuals requiring “wraparound” community services (like housing or case management).
Our focus is different: We provide specialized psychiatric evaluations and medication management for individuals with commercial insurance or using out-of-network benefits. Because we do not offer the extensive social services found at state centers, we can maintain a significantly shorter waitlist for diagnostic evaluations.
Current Access Comparison (NH 2025)
| Service Type | Typical NH Wait | Our Current Wait Time |
| Psychiatric Evaluation | 2-4 Months | 1–3 Weeks |
| Talk Therapy / Counseling | 2–4 Months | 1-2 Months |
Understanding Your Insurance Coverage
The most effective way to skip the wait is to work with a clinic that is already in-network with your provider. We accept the following private plans in New Hampshire:
-
Anthem / Blue Cross Blue Shield
-
Cigna
-
Optum Plans: This includes UnitedHealthcare (UHC), Harvard Pilgrim, and other Optum-managed networks.
Note on Medicaid/Medicare: Please note that we do not participate in Medicaid or Medicare programs. If you require these services or “wraparound” community support, we recommend contacting your regional NH Community Mental Health Center.
3 Tips to Secure an Appointment Faster
- Search for “Medication Management” specifically. Many people search for “Therapy,” hoping to find someone who can also prescribe. In NH, only Psychiatrists, APRNs, or PAs can manage psychiatric medications. To find the shortest wait, search for “Psychiatric Evaluation [City], NH.”
- Mention Your Specific Insurance Early. Clinics that accept Optum or Anthem can often verify your benefits instantly, speeding up the intake process.
- Prepare for a Comprehensive Evaluation. Your first visit isn’t just a “med check.” It is a 60–90 minute diagnostic evaluation. To make the most of your appointment, have a list of previous medications and any relevant health history ready.
Frequently Asked Questions (NH Residents)
“Do I need a referral from my primary care doctor?”
For most PPO and HMO plans, you can self-refer. You do not need to wait for your doctor to send a fax to get started.
“Can I do my psychiatric visits via Telehealth?”
Yes. We offer secure video appointments for residents throughout New Hampshire, making it easier to receive care from your home or office.
“What if I’m in a crisis?”
If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please contact the NH Rapid Response Access Point at 833-710-6477 or call 988.
Ready for an Evaluation?
Don’t let a 6-month waitlist stand between you and the support you deserve. If you have private insurance and need a professional psychiatric evaluation, we are currently accepting new patients with a short turnaround.
